Since its first
performance in 1989, Covenant Dance Theatre, now Covenant Ballet
Theatre of Brooklyn has been dedicated to bringing meaningful,
quality performances to the
Brooklyn community and beyond. Made
up of a core of gifted dance artists, CBTB has established a
substantial repertory of original ballets rich in narrative detail
and emotion as well as a number of shorter works.
Committed to
education, the company performances have given thousands of school
children their first experience with live dance, and have provided
invaluable professional performance opportunities to talented young
students from the company’s school,
CBTB
Academy
formerly known as Covenant Dance Studio.
“Choreographer Marla Hirokawa…combines
ballet and modern dance in bold engaging style…Hirokawa’s swing
dance choreography was as expansive and interesting to watch as the
later blend of ballet and modern moves in the two military segments,
and several of her swing dance couples were superb.”
- Nisei Review, John Berger,
Honolulu Star Bulletin
“…while accommodating the technical
limitations of the students, is filled with drama and energy. Her
gifts as a choreographer—her strong sense of dramatic structure and
balance—are amply displayed.”
